What happens if I reformat after upgrading to Windows 7?
I currently have Vista, and I’m thinking of upgrading to 7. If, after I have upgraded, I wish to reformat my hard drive, can I re-upgrade using the same access code that I used the last time, or will I have to purchase a new code?
Please post in any information that you think might be relevant.
If you use the "upgrade" discs, they just want to see a prior Windows install to go in correctly.
That means if you want to format your drive, you should do it within the installation process itself, rather than before you start the installation.
If you’d like to format your drive in the future, you should be able to just run the installation again, and as long as you’ve booted from the disc, you can do formatting and partitioning within the install process itself. If you format the drive before you start the installation you’re going to have issues.
And as long as you’re going to the same machine, you shouldn’t need a new code.
Why not reformat between Vista and Win7? That would be the smart thing to do!
well why would you format your computer AFTER you installed windows on it?
formatting deletes the data on a drive (turns all the 1′s into 0′s again)
if your drive hasn’t been raped by viruses and spam, then formatting probably isn’t needed.
oh also, If you purchase the "upgrade disk" for windows 7
You’ll have to reinstall vista again after the format, and then upgrade to windows 7 again.
you need the full installation disk to install windows 7 outright (thats why the upgrade disks are considerably cheaper then the full versions)
and its always a good idea to download all your drivers for your computer before changing or installing windows.
sometimes if you upgrade windows, and windows can’t automatically find your drivers, you get stuck
like often enough with Vista, it won’t install my network drivers, so i wont have any type of internet connection to continue finishing the installation.
Your PC vendors website will have all of your drivers available., just search your model number.
Best of luck, and win7 is pretty cool.
woo directX 11!
Dont know about Windows 7 but when i used XP I reinstalled it many times and it went smooth
why would you want to reformat after upgrading to windows 7? i’m guessing that you purchased the upgrade version of windows 7, so you really just wasted your money. you should have purchased the full version of windows 7 (or gotten it via "unorthodox" means, but i can’t specify or yahoo answers will ban me again), that way you would be able to do a "clean install" of windows 7.
