Why do some people call the computer case part of a computer a CPU?

I’ve always referred to it as the computer, system, or system unit. I thought that my college education fiancee was just wrong; she learned to call it that from her college computer course, however I recently heard a couple of coworkers calling it a CPU. How much physical memory use is reasonable when you aren't running anything?

I have a <1yr old dell with 2 GB of memory. It has been a major pain in the rear– crashing, video card problems, etc. since the very beginning. It also runs sluggishly for simple things like opening programs. My question is this: the computer is using about 54 percent of its physical memory when nothing is running (other than Vista and Symantec). Is this a reasonable number?
