Anyone have any tips on running ethernet cables in a house?

My house is about 12 years old and was not built with network cable runs. Can someone link me to some good sites/give me some good ideas on running cables? Ideally I’d like the modem/router mounted on my board where the electric/cable/phone lines come in and then run ethernet from there. Can this be done without ripping too many walls out? Any good tricks to use existing cable runs to snake my ethernet cables along those?
I have a wireless network. The question is strictly about wiring runs not how to set up a network.

How can I setup a network storage on my wireless linksys network?

I would like to hook my external hard drive to my network so my wife and I can save to that drive rather than our laptops. We don’t have a computer hooked to the router. We have the modem, a linksys wireless router and that’s it. What do you suggest I do?

What device should DHCP be enabled on my network?

I have a complexed network at home, consisting of a NetComm NB7 modem router and a router(wireless N) with 4 ports, which are connected to either computers or more switches.
I’m wondering if my netcomm or my main router(wireless N) with 4 ports should determine network nodes IP address (DHCP) – both are capable of DHCP.
It seems such a small modem router can’t handle such high traffic.

How to remove computer server and replace with regular router?

I was wondering if anybody know how to remove server and replace it with regular router. I tried to pull out old server, and replace it with router, but the internet is suddenly dead. I checked the server, and apparently it was set into a static IP. How can I remove the server without taking down the internet? How can I make the router generate its own IP address? The sequence should be Internet>modem>server>router>switch>client. Thank you.
