My computer’s been acting pretty choppy lately, and from what I understand, de-fragmenting it could help.
However, I’m not sure what that means, exactly. What does it do? Does it like wipe my hard drive or something? Or does it like get rid of stuff that shouldn’t be there? I really don’t know what it’s all about.

My laptop which is an hp dv6000, continues to lose memory on the hard drive to the point where i have about 200mb left after 66gb, but i have not been downloading anything at all! What do i need to do to stop this? Please help.

A friend of mine who works in the IT dept told me I should do it at least once a year, is that too little?

Also should I run CHKDSK before or after I defragment it? What are some other programs for Windows XP that I should download and run before or after defragmenting the hard drive to keep it in excellent condition? What are some other ways to keep the hard drive in excellent condition besides doing this?
