How to share files between two computers using an ethernet cable?
Hi, I have two huge files (ISO files) on a laptop which I need to transfer to another laptop. The files are each over 8GB in size so I can’t use my flash drive or cds (I don’t have any around). Is there a way I can hook up the two laptops with an ethernet cable and transfer the files? What are the actual steps I need to follow?
yes you can. once two laptop are connected with ethernet cable:
i presssume you have Vista OS.
Do this in both laptop:
1. go to "control panel" – "network and internet" – "network and sharing center". In "network and sharing center", turn on the "network discovery", "file sharing" and "public folder sharing".
2. click the "view status" in "local area connection", then click the "properties" click the "Internet Protocol version 4" and click the properties. Click the "Use the following IP address" . for laptop 1 just assign 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 for laptop 2. no need to input in the subnet mask just click it and it will automatically generate value. Leave the gateway blank.
3. in a laptop that has the file you want to transfer, click the start menu – "network".
If you are going to plug the ethernet cable directly from one laptop to the other, then you MUST use a crossover cable. Other than that, the first answer here should work.
You need a cross over cable for that, then set up a network btwn the two PCs. Or a straight cable and a switch/hub. You can also connect 2 PCs wirelesly if they both have Wifi.
