Can standing on an ethernet cable slow down your internet connection?

This is probably an absurd question, but if you were to stand on or squeeze a water hose, that would affect the water pressure. So could doing the same to an ethernet cable slow down or cause errors in your computer’s internet connection?

  • You did what? RTFM!:

No. Not unless there is already a problem with the cable.

While a wire looks like a hose (long and skinny) the analogy ends there. You can drink water from a hose but you can’t drink electrons from a wire. :)

But repeated bending could break the wire.

It wouldn’t slow down the connection. However, standing on the cable (or walking on it or rolling a chair over it) will eventually damage the cable which will slow your connection to exactly ZERO.

Well not like a garden hose but technically speaking it could be done. If you damage the twisted pairs especially at the termination points it could start to introduce errors into the frames which will cause a slow down in the connection. But standing on the cable won’t make it harder for the electrons to flow like it would do to water flowing through a garden hose.
